Raoul sees a girl in a red dress while he is riding the train and the last time he saw her she was carved into a mountain and she was thirty ft. tall.

The journey helped Raoul because Aunt Rosalie Stands Tall cures Raoul's tuberculosis. "It began when I was thirteen. I had tuberculosis scars on my lungs, but this illness was more than tuberculosis. The regular doctors were mystified by the fevers and delirium that accompanied a bad cough and nausea. After six months of treatment without improvement they gave up." (p. 3)
