Glossary Of Poetic Terms
Define the following terms as they apply to poetry. Find examples in the text as your read "Love That Dog" - cite examples with quotes and page numbers.

Alliteration - where a bunch of words all start with the same consonant sound "beat-beat-beating." (p. 9)
Assonance - to repeat a vowel sound in a sentence or phrase "My brain was pop-pop-popping when I was looking at those poems." (p. 35)
Figurative Language - not meaning it (Source: www.yourdictionary.com) "as if he were saying Thank you thank you thank you." (p. 27)
Hyperbole - an exaggeration used to make a point "and they would yell out CAR!" (p. 32)

Irony
-The opposite of what you think in order to be funny.
-"Why doesn't the person just keep going if he's got so many miles to go before he sleeps?"

-To imagine pictures in your mind.
-"Maybe the wheelbarrow poet was just making a picture with words." (Pg. 22)
Metaphor
-A word or phrase that is used to refer another thing.

Meter
-Something you use to measure rhythm.
-"Blue car, blue car, shining bright in the darkness of the night: who could see you speeding by like a comet in the sky?" (Pg.8)

Onomatopoeia - a word that imitates a sound "Clash, flash, screech." (p. 31)
Personification - give human characteristics to something that's not human "I don't want to write about that blue car that had miles to go before it slept." (p. 7)
